Holey Socks Batman!

The "standard" protective case for most hand-held instruments is a relatively hard leather enclosure that adds considerable volume to the toolbox . . . and doesn't get any smaller when the instrument is out of the case. I've found it useful to re-cycle my "holey-socks" into a soft instrument case as follows:

Start with turning the sock inside out over your arm . . .

Step 2 . . .

Put a #64 rubber band around the sock 1/2-way along its length. If you'd like a really snug retainer, use two rubber bands . . .

Step 3 . . .

Pull the upper end of the sock over the rubber band and position it so that the toe of the sock is flush with the hem . . .

Step 4 . . .

Use some small tye-wraps to "stitch" the hem of the sock to the toe . . .

Now you've got a soft sleeve that slips easily over the typical hand-held instrument. If you'd like more padding, use two socks. This style of case wads up and goes into your pocket while you're using the instrument. If the instrument has test leads, those can go inside too.
